The "half-share" concept is not new - it was enshrined in the Merchant Shipping Act of 1854 in the United Kingdom, where "ownership" of any vessel could be divided into as many as 64 shares. A "share" was usualy held / sold by merchants or investors who wanted to have a legal interest in the profit / loss of a vessel and its cargo.
